Herd types

 

Cattle

Beef breeding herds

Herds of beef breeding cattle which are farmed predominantly for the production of calves, which may be sold or kept for either breeding or slaughter. These herds can attain a maximum status of C10.

Beef dry herds

Herds of non-breeding beef cattle which are farmed predominantly for the purpose of slaughter or grazing. They are reared primarily for weight gain and “finishing” for prime beef. These herds can attain a maximum status of C2. (Lifestyle block owner’s cattle will most likely fall into this category).

Dairy herds

Herds of dairy breeding cattle which are farmed for the supply of milk. These herds can attain a maximum status of C10.

Dairy dry herds

Herds comprised of dairy cattle which are not farmed for the supply of milk. They are reared or grazed primarily for the purpose of stocking dairy herds. These herds can attain a maximum status of C2.

Deer

Deer breeding herds

Herds in which deer are farmed predominantly for the production of fawns which may be sold or kept for either breeding, slaughter or velvet production. These herds can attain a maximum status of C10.

Deer dry herds

Non-breeding herds in which deer are farmed predominantly for the production of venison. These herds can attain a maximum status of C2.

Game estate herds

Herds of deer which are the private property of the herd owner (as distinct from deer owned by the Crown) and which are managed under controlled conditions for the predominant purpose of hunting. These herds can attain a maximum status of C2.

New herd status

Please note: All new herd statuses will be set to C2 unless copies of ALL the Animal Status Declarations that originally accompanied the stock that established your herd are provided. ALL stock must have come from a higher status than C2 to quality. This only applies to herds able to attain a maximum status of C10.
