The primary objective of the NPMS is to reduce the number of Tb-infected cattle and deer herds in New Zealand to a 0.2 % Annual Period Prevalence* rate by 2012/13. That equates to having about 50 infected herds nationally (at current national herd numbers).
The 0.2 % figure is the international benchmark for a country to be recognised as officially free of bovine Tb, as set by the Office Internationale Epizooties (World Organisation for Animal Health).

* Annual Period Prevalence rate is the number of cattle and deer herds classified as infected at the start of the financial year, together with cattle and deer herds found infected during the financial year, divided by total cattle and deer herds, as a percentage.
