The AHB’s primary role is to manage the implementation of the National Pest Management Strategy for Bovine Tb, with the aim of achieving Tb freedom in New Zealand by 2013.

Key functions include:

Vector Control
The major cause of Tb in cattle and deer herds in New Zealand is contact with wild vectors of the disease.  Vector control, mainly aimed at possums and ferrets, is the key to Tb control in NZ. 

Disease Control
Disease control includes all measures to detect and eradicate Tb within cattle and deer herds, and to prevent transmission of the disease through the movement of infected livestock.

Research and Communications
Research carried out by the AHB is mainly aimed at achieving short term improvements in existing disease and vector control technology.  AHB carries out national and local communications to support the implementation of vector and disease control programmes.
